Vanderpool Takes Reins at FAA Federal Credit Union

Banking is not a complicated business, but it?s a hard business.

That?s what Todd Vanderpool, then-CEO of BankTennessee, told The Daily News in 2010. It was a couple years removed from the near-market collapse of 2008. But the scars of 2008 still showed up in some of Vanderpool?s general comments about the industry.

?It?s a real interesting time to be a banker,? said Vanderpool, who?s since left BankTennessee and now has a new job as CEO of FAA Federal Credit Union.

?We are a reflection of whatever is going on in our communities. ? We gather deposits, we make loans and we put them out to people and businesses. And when the economy goes through what it?s gone through, it affects our customers.?

Vanderpool worked at Collierville-based BankTennessee since 2001 in several capacities, including as chief credit officer and a member of the board of directors, the asset liability committee and executive committee. His new employer is a not-for-profit financial cooperative chartered in 1954. It has seven locations ? four in Memphis, two in Tupelo, Miss., and one in Houston.

With $98 million in assets and more than 12,000 members, it?s also one of the largest credit unions in Memphis. Vanderpool replaces Dawn Graeter as CEO of the credit union, who resigned in 2011 and Tom Sammons, vice chairman of the board who also served as interim CEO.

Vanderpool said the credit union?s focus ?is on providing our members a safe, sound and secure financial institution and delivering (it) with uncommon caring. While we offer a variety of deposit and investment accounts, we make loans to our members using sound lending practices, as we have for almost 60 years.?

He brings more than three decades of experience in the financial services industry to his new role. Prior to working at BankTennesse, he was senior vice president of National Bank of Commerce and head of its metropolitan and correspondent banking division for three years.

From 1994 to 1998, Vanderpool was president of First Columbus National Bank/Deposit Guaranty National Bank in Columbus, Miss., and from 1987 to 1994, he was president of Deposit Guaranty in Southaven.

?Todd has a long and accomplished career in banking with a proven record of delivering strong operating results,? said Chris Syriac, chairman of the credit union?s board of directors. ?The board sees Todd as a great fit to continue FAA Federal Credit Union?s tradition of creating exceptional financial value for our members.?

From The Razorback Family To The Aggie Family, The McDonalds Are At Home

It?s called ?Senior Walk,? and it?s one of the most well-known and unique traditions in the world of higher education. Since 1876, the names of every graduate of the University of Arkansas have been etched into stone, with nearly 150,000 names creating a walkway that spans the campus.? Walk far enough down the nearly five-mile sidewalk, and you?ll come across the names of two members of the Aggie family: Scott and Diane McDonald.

The names of Scott, who is Texas A&M?s assistant vice president for academic services and director of admissions, and Diane, the university?s executive director of marketing & social media, appear four times on the walkway. The couple holds bachelor?s degrees in public administration, as well as a master?s of higher education administration for Scott and an MBA for Diane, all from Arkansas.

Scott and Diane?s shared passion for higher education brought their family to Texas A&M, but their story begins in Fayetteville, Ark.

Diane, a native of Hot Springs, Ark., visited the University of Arkansas as a high school student and knew immediately that she wanted to attend there. Scott was similarly drawn to the university, and coupled with the appeal of participating in the university?s marching band?s percussion section and the much cooler Arkansas weather, he too enrolled.

And it is there that the couple met: both were student ambassadors who regularly gave campus tours, and both were also members of the Razorback Marching Band. They married in 1996, after each of them had graduated, and have since had two children: a 13-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son.

The couple was living in Clarksville, Tenn., in 2006, both working at Austin Peay State University, when Scott was offered a position at Texas A&M. In addition to the move putting them closer to their families, the McDonalds were looking forward to learning about Texas A&M, a culture that was slightly familiar to them.

As members of the Razorback Marching Band, Scott and Diane traveled twice during their undergraduate careers to College Station, including the 1991 contest, which marked Arkansas? last visit to Kyle Field before they departed for the Southeastern Conference.

?I was in awe of the 12^th Man standing the entire game ? and the band, the caliber of the Fightin? Texas Aggie Band was just incredible,? Diane says. ?And I remember how loud the stadium was. The unison of 12^th Man doing the yells was amazing.?

Texas A&M was even more familiar to Scott, a native Texan who was raised in Arlington and Houston.

?Growing up in Texas, you knew that if someone had a degree from Texas A&M, they were using their degree to do great things,? he says.

Upon arriving in Aggieland six years ago, the couple was immediately welcomed into the Aggie family. They also have become avid fans of nearly every sport at Texas A&M, especially women?s basketball. The McDonalds have followed Coach Gary Blair?s successes over the years ? he was the women?s basketball coach at Arkansas when they both were in school ? and Diane even made a special trip to take the couple?s daughter to Indianapolis to see the Aggies win the national championship in 2011.

Scott and Diane?s positions at Texas A&M put each of them at the forefront of some of the university?s most critical areas.

In his role, Scott oversees recruitment, admissions and International Student Services with an amazing staff to assist him, he proudly says. And admissions is an area that continues to experience incredible growth at the university ? for example, Scott says, when he arrived on campus in 2006, Texas A&M received nearly 20,000 applications for freshman admission. For fall 2012, that number was just over 30,000.

?Texas A&M is getting more and more competitive, and probably the hardest part of my job is that we have so many academically prepared students who want to attend Texas A&M,? he explains. ?We have just so many more applicants than have seats in the freshman class.?

The admissions office is seeing increased numbers in applications, as well as an increase in students from the Southeast sending their SAT and ACT scores, adds Scott, and given the visibility that Texas A&M has experienced with its move to the SEC, it?s easy to see a correlation between the two.

Extending that visibility and continuing to grow the Texas A&M brand is Diane?s main objective. Diane manages the university?s academic marketing, including web, creative, traditional media and social media.

As a marketer and Arkansas alum, Diane has watched closely how the University of Arkansas? visibility has steadily increased since they joined the SEC 20 years ago. And now that Texas A&M is in the same position, she?s looking forward to continuing to see Texas A&M?s national visibility rise as well.

?Texas A&M has already received a significant amount of PR from our move to the SEC, but we have many more stories to tell,? Diane says. ?Texas A&M is having a tremendous impact on issues facing our community, state and nation.?

After a joint presentation the couple delivered at a national higher education conference a few years ago, the McDonalds discovered that the admissions offices and marketing teams at many of the nation?s universities often don?t work together.

?This was surprising to learn,? says Diane. ?We believe that both of these groups should work together ? and we do work together to tell the story of Texas A&M through joint projects.?

Though they admit to sometimes bouncing different ideas off one another, work doesn?t follow the couple home ? in fact,?much of the campus community doesn?t even realize that they are married, as the McDonalds treat one another as professionals while on the job.

The McDonalds? earlier impressions of the Texas A&M have only strengthened further since their family has called Aggieland home.

?There is a true sense of family on this campus,? Diane says. ?Now that we understand the traditions, we love them. And we?re so proud to be part of the future of this great university.

It?s a sentiment that Scott shares ? and one that has his family cheering for both sides on during Saturday?s football game.

?We?re proud of both institutions, and not just by what they do on the playing field, but the reputation they have for educating students. I love my alma mater, but I?m also very proud to be an Aggie,? he says. ?Whoever wins, the McDonalds win.?

We're Not Really Teaching Our Students to Read Correctly

Why is it that in the 21st Century and with all of the vast resources available to us, our children are becoming worse and worse readers and high school drop out rates are at an epidemic level. This isn?t rocket science, it?s READING? something that every single man, woman and child should be able to do.

As a mom and a businesswoman, I have seen the devastating effects of poor readers, in school and in business. The hit to one?s self esteem when not truly literate is enormous. Statistics I?ve seen indicating that about 85% of all juvenile offenders are illiterate are tragic, to say the least.

I started researching this area many years ago and was shocked to discover that the centuries-old method of teaching one the sounds of the alphabet letters and their combinations had been all but been destroyed in the 20th Century. Apparently the old adage, ?if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it? didn?t apply to teaching reading.

In my research, I found that at the turn of the 20th Century, new concepts of ?whole language? and ?sight word? were introduced to our children as a way for them to learn to read. However, as able as some might be to memorize key words, memorization did not help them sound out every new word they would encounter and as a result, a staggering percentage of high school seniors only read at 4th or 5th grade levels!

We can and must turn this around. Teaching reading is actually easy, if you have the right tools and the rewards for both the student and the coach are enormous. But, this does entail some time from both the student and the coach? about 3 hours a week can achieve tremendous results, over about a 10 week period.

An older sibling or a parent can easily and effectively tutor a student to become a strong and proficient reader and the boost to that student?s morale is more than worth the small amount of time required. There are 5 essential ingredients to successful phonics instruction: 1. phonemic awareness (the ability to notice and work with the individual letter sounds); 2. phonics (the relationship between the letters and the individual sounds); 3. fluency (the ability to read words quickly and accurately); 4. vocabulary (the words we need to know to adequately communicate) and 5. text comprehension (understanding the meaning of the words spoken or written).

Deleting any one of these 5 components to reading instruction is a tremendous disservice to those needing to learn to read but these points are not necessarily being taught in every classroom and that?s not necessarily the teacher?s fault. Our teachers aren?t even being taught to teach reading properly. How can throwing some words on the classroom walls and having the students memorize them be considered teaching them to read? How do they understand the words they?re reading if they?re not looking up the words in dictionaries?

Only when we help our children become strong, proficient readers will we actually see them thrive as students and only then will we see them be afforded the full education they deserve in order to become strong, productive individuals.

NEW YORK (AP) ? What a difference a year makes.

This time last year, Emily VanCamp was hoping and praying her ABC series "Revenge" would be a success. It was ? and regularly won its time slot.

Now she's gearing up for the show's second season, premiering Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT.

"I was wondering what was going to happen with the show and, oh gosh, I remember just trying to repress the stress so much," VanCamp said in a recent interview. "You just want to focus on the work and not pay too much attention to all that stuff, but you're putting so much of yourself into it, and the fact that it all paid off and that it did so well has been kind of extraordinary. It's been a crazy year to say the least."

VanCamp plays Emily Thorne, a young woman out to get even for her father's death. She infiltrates a wealthy community in the Hamptons to take down the people who betrayed her family.

Like her character, 26-year-old VanCamp is a private person who prefers to remain a bit of a mystery to the public. She doesn't like to talk about her personal life (although she's rumored to be dating her "Revenge" co-star Josh Bowman) and says she's trying to come to terms with the public's interest in her life now that she has a hit TV show.

"We live in a time where the media is a very difficult thing to navigate because it's everywhere, and I tend to want to be a lot more private with my life," she said. "I've managed to do that for 10 years in this business.

"I've found a really nice balance, but this show is a different scale so ... I'm trying to figure all that out at the moment but ... some of the actors that I admire the most do have an element of intrigue. You don't know everything about them. It's very important to be able to distinguish the actors from the characters they play."

One thing VanCamp is getting used to as a leading lady is being sleep deprived.

"I'm exhausted almost all the time," she said. "I keep saying I'm weirdly preparing myself for motherhood because once you can get ahold of this sleep deprivation thing I think you have a leg up. And I'm definitely sleep deprived."

VanCamp also has adjusted to her high-profile role in "Revenge" by seeing herself as part of an "incredible" cast.

"I think it's really interesting to say 'my show' or 'I'm a lead of it' because it is such a collaborative thing ... but I am definitely there all the time," she laughed.

"I'm excited by challenging myself physically and mentally every day. That's what keeps me going and makes me love what I do so I really can't complain about it." She pauses then says: "I complain sometimes. I'm not gonna lie."

Getting Web video off your PC and onto your plasma screen used to be a niche activity. No more: Consumer-tracking service NPD says TV sets are now the most popular way to watch streaming video.

NPD says 45 percent of consumers report that TV is now their primary Web video screen, up from 33 percent last year. It basically swapped places with the PC, which used to account for?48 percent of viewing but now represents 31 percent.*

This is a story about devices: NPD figures that 10 percent of homes now have at least one Internet-enabled TV (though I bet that only a minority of them are actually plugged into the Web), and we?re seeing a steady increase in the use of Web-video peripherals, like Blu-ray players, Apple TVs and Microsoft Xbox 360s.

And it?s also about content: NPD says the most popular service for viewing Web content on TV is Netflix, with 40 percent of connected TV watchers using the service.

Here?s NPD?s general screen breakdown by device. Curious that ?mobile? doesn?t show up as a category; then again, maybe mobile is always a third choice compared to bigger screens. Also odd that the iPad and other tablets don?t break 1 percent.

Seasonal Outdoor Scavenger Hunt: The Fall ... - Jersey Family Fun

My family and I take walks regularly, however seeing the same things over and over can get a little boring. I started to notice the kids were lagging and we weren?t as motivated to get out the door. I had to fix this quickly. I started thinking of different ideas to make our family walks more entertaining. Sure we could bring our bikes and get in some added?exercise?but that would only hold us over for so long. ?I was starting to get bored thinking about ways to motivate us when it hit me! We were going to go on a nature scavenger hunt.?

The gears started turning again. What ?items would we look for? How many things should I put on the list? ?Will I be able to make this fun for all of my kids? We have an age range of 8-13, so we would have to have a good balance of easy and hard things to find. The more I thought about it the more I realized we could make this a seasonal adventure.

The kids had a great time looking for the items and it made our walk time that much more enjoyable.

NY's latest sex scandal dogged by sordid past

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? It was an odd assignment for the young, pretty staffer when she was ordered to go along on a trip to Atlantic City with her boss. But the reason soon became clear.

She said she spent much of the trip struggling to fend off the advances and kisses of 72-year-old Brooklyn Assemblyman Vito Lopez. He was persistent, she said, and eventually put his hand between her legs.

She and another female staffer said it was part of a regular routine of office harassment that included inappropriate touching and comments about their bodies, how they dressed and even how they were getting along with their boyfriends. They said the job included writing letters to Lopez about how much they loved their jobs ? letters Lopez complained were "insufficiently effusive," according to his official censure.

The accusations that emerged over the summer are hardly unusual in a state capital, especially Albany, which has such a rich history of sexual misconduct by lawmakers that it has its own, unwritten Las Vegas-like code: What happens north of Bear Mountain stays there.

But what began as a relatively modest scandal has pierced the veil of the so-called Bear Mountain Compact, unraveling in public before a state ethics committee, revealing more sexual misconduct accusations against Lopez and a secret six-figure payoff to the accusers with taxpayer money that was approved by one of the most powerful lawmakers in the state.

That lawmaker, Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, was initially singed by the scandal, with some political opponents calling for his resignation. A special prosecutor is investigating whether crimes were committed, and a wide-ranging probe by the state's nascent ethics watchdog is exploring the roles played by other powerful Democrats, including the attorney general and comptroller.

How effectively the Joint Commission on Public Ethics handles the politically charged case will reflect on the man who created it as part of his campaign promise to "clean up" Albany: Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, long considered a possible presidential candidate in 2016.

"You will always find situations where people do things wrong," Cuomo said. "You will always find situations where people in power make mistakes, or abuse their power, or abuse their authority, or are corrupt or venal."

"The question becomes when people make a mistake, or when a bad thing is done, what is the response?"

In the case of Lopez, a longtime Democratic dealmaker who was lampooned in New York City tabloid headlines as "King Leer" and "Gropez," the allegations that emerged over the summer were found credible by New York's Assembly ethics committee. The panel censured him Aug. 24, and Silver stripped Lopez of seniority perks and power.

The censure revealed a previously unknown set of accusations against Lopez made in June that were settled secretly with $103,000 in public money approved by Silver. That deal was crafted with input from lawyers with the attorney general's and comptroller's offices.

Lopez, who has called the scandal an "onslaught of character attacks," said: "I have never sexually harassed any staff, and I hope and intend to prove in the coming months the political nature of these accusations."

Cuomo is the third governor in a row to try to put more teeth in ethics oversight. Four years before Cuomo took office, Democrat Eliot Spitzer created his own ethics board to sanitize Albany, only to resign amid charges he solicited prostitutes. His Democratic successor, David Paterson, was forced to admit on just his second day in office that he had affairs with a "number of women" while a state senator.

Such clashes of sex and power have become part of the lore of Albany, where a cluster of taverns a short walk from the Capitol had for years featured a loud mix of pols and young staffers mingling over scotch and steaks. In the 1990s, the New York Post's front page declared Albany "Sin City."

And a decade ago, the Albany County district attorney investigating claims of sexual harassment and rape in the Capitol put it this way: "Any father who would let his daughter be an intern in the state Legislature should have his head examined."

After the initial flurry, Silver appears to have blunted any serious threat to his power from this scandal.

Silver, a 69-year-old lawyer from Manhattan, is one of Albany's most powerful, little-understood and private of figures, called "the Sphinx" by some for his ability to prevail in budgets and policy.

A renowned political strategist, he may even have strengthened his position by making sexual harassment harder to get away with. By publicly admitting he was wrong to seal the case with a confidentiality agreement and promising not to do any others, he issued a strong early warning to lawmakers.

Democratic Assemblyman John McEneny says the Lopez case has already struck back at sexual harassment, just as previous reforms to the legislative intern program addressed some of the barhopping and relationships with young ? usually female ? staffers.

"Individually, there will always be a problem as long as there are human beings," said McEneny, a member of the Assembly ethics committee. "But institutionally, we tend to take steps to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Cyborg surgeon: Hand and technology combine in new surgical tool that enables superhuman precision

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Even the most skilled and steady surgeons experience minute, almost imperceptible hand tremors when performing delicate tasks. Normally, these tiny motions are inconsequential, but for doctors specializing in fine-scale surgery, such as operating inside the human eye or repairing microscopic nerve fibers, freehand tremors can pose a serious risk for patients.

By harnessing a specialized optical fiber sensor, a new "smart" surgical tool can compensate for this unwanted movement by making hundreds of precise position corrections each second -- fast enough to keep the surgeon's hand on target. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md., have combined the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging technique as a distance sensor with computer-controlled piezoelectric motors to actively stabilize the tip of a surgical tool.

A paper describing their new device, named SMART (Smart Micromanipulation Aided Robotic-surgical Tool), was published September 27 in the Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal Optics Express.

"Microsurgery relies on excellent motor control to perform critical tasks," said Cheol Song, a postdoctoral fellow in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Johns Hopkins. "But certain fine micro-manipulations remain beyond the motor control of even the most skilled surgeon." At its most steady, the human hand naturally trembles, moving on the order of 50-100 microns (about the thickness of a sheet of paper) several times each second.

Various optomechatronics techniques, including robotics, have been developed to help augment stability and minimize the impact of hand tremors. None so far has been able to seamlessly merge simple fiber-optic rapid and fine-grained sensing with handheld automated surgical tools. The major challenge for researchers has been finding a way to precisely measure and compensate for the relative motions of a surgical instrument in relation to the target.

The emerging imaging technique of OCT attracted the attention of the researchers because it has higher resolution (approximately 10 microns) than either MRI or ultrasound. It also uses eye-safe near infrared light to image tissues. To apply this imaging technique to their work, the research team first had to integrate an OCT-based high-speed high-precision distance sensor directly into a small, handheld surgical device. The device could then hold a variety of surgical instruments at the tip, such as a scalpel or forceps. The well-known fiber-optic based common path optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) technique provided the essential capability. As its name suggests, the optical signal of this sensor uses the same path, or optical fiber, to both transmit and receive the near infrared light.

Because this single fiber-optic cable is so small and flexible, the researchers could easily integrate it into the front of a tool used for eye surgery. By continually sending and receiving the near infrared laser beams, the high-speed fiber-optic sensor precisely measures the motion of the probe. This information then feeds to a computer that sends signals to small piezoelectric motors integrated into the surgical device to control the position of the tool tip. This creates a series of "station keeping" maneuvers that compensate for the surgeon's hand tremors.

Combined, the sensor and motors can operate accurately at 500 hertz (500 times each second), which is much higher than the typical tremor frequency of 0-15 hertz.

The researchers compared the effectiveness of the system by testing its ability to compensate for hand tremors during 5- and 30-second intervals. According to the researchers, these time periods were sufficient to determine the different characteristic between short- and long-term hand tremors. "A 30-second time period is enough to evaluate a surgeon's basic physiological hand tremor characteristics," said Song. For complete characterization, however, a record of a full surgical procedure, which typically lasts more than 3 hours, will be needed.

For their study, the tests were performed on two targets. The first was a dry "phantom," a material that has sufficient properties to stand as a proxy for medical research. A more real-world test was also done on a viable chicken embryo, which better simulated a realistic surgical environment because of the unpredictable movements of the live embryo.

During the next few years, the researchers hope to take their instrument from the laboratory to the operating suite, and with additional refinements expand its use to other fine-scale surgeries.

"The main objective of our research has been to make an established surgical tool 'smarter' by incorporating fiber-optic sensors and motion control to allow surgeons to maneuver the tool tip precisely and safely," said Jin U. Kang, another researcher with the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at Johns Hopkins. "SMART, which is capable of fine motion control and sensing, could significantly enhance the surgical performance of doctors and minimize surgical accidents."

I recently had an evening flight rescheduled to leave two hours later due to problems at the airport my plane was coming from. By the time we got into our connecting city, there were no more flights out to our final destination (it was midnight) until the next morning. Waiting for the early flight would have meant missing a critical meeting and putting my job in jeopardy. So, we decided to rent a car (quite expensive) and drive the remaining few hours to our final city. The tickets were purchased on United with a United Explorer card. Does that card (or any card) provide insurance to pay for unexpected travel hiccups like this (to cover the cost of the rental, a bus/train or lodging/meals, etc.)? ?? -- Timothy

Dear Timothy,
Your United Explorer is either a Visa Platinum or Visa Signature. If you qualified for the latter, you're entitled to the suite of traveler's insurance offered to all Visa Signature cardholders: travel accident insurance (up to $250,000), lost luggage reimbursement (up to $3,000 per trip), car rental collision damage waiver, roadside dispatch and travel and emergency assistance service.

That last one would be your best bet for covering expenses incurred by a delayed flight charged on your card. Alas, Visa Signature does not cover trip delay or cancellation.

Trip cancellation, interruption or delay is one of three standard problems covered by travelers insurance, according to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association. (The other two are baggage loss or delay and medical insurance and evacuation.) Most comprehensive travelers insurance policies -- the kind you buy specifically for this purpose -- would reimburse you $100 to $150 a day for taxis, meals, lodging and other expenses incurred because of a flight delayed by a storm or strike. Some policies also cover prepaid reservations missed because of the delay.

In this situation, you wouldn't have been any better off with a World MasterCard, such as the Chase Freedom or US Airways co-branded card. While World MasterCard covers trip cancellation (unlike Visa Signature) up to the cost of the trip, it does not cover travel delay. American Express allows you to purchase such insurance as an add-on and premium cards such as the Platinum ($450 annual fee) include it.

Is there a standard travel rewards card that covers trip delay? Yes. If you had charged your flight on a Discover Escape card ($60 annual fee), you would have been covered for up to $150 per day of food and lodging expenses for "a scheduled trip on a common carrier delayed over six hours." (The coverage does not include car rental, so you still would have been out of pocket there.) Discover Escape also covers trip cancellation up to the cost of the trip, luggage reimbursement up to $2,500 per trip and up to $500,000 in flight insurance.

If your flight was delayed by an "act of God," as a flight attendant once described my weather-delayed flight, the airline is not responsible for resulting expenses. (I had to pay for my own hotel that night, thanks to a storm.) However, if the flight was rescheduled for reasons other than weather or strike -- ie, the airline itself screwed up -- you might try hitting up United for your expenses.

Asking family members and guests to remove shoes before entering a home will prevent mold spores from being tracked inside on footwear. Scheduling regular professional carpet and area rug cleanings will prevent mold spores from taking hold among carpet and rug fibers. It?s also important to schedule regular cleaning services for draperies (which can be exposed to mold spores through open windows), upholstery, and tile and grout, especially if furniture or tiling has been regularly exposed to a damp environment.

Syrian rebel bombs target security building in Damascus

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Bombs planted by rebels exploded at a school building occupied by pro-government militias in Damascus on Tuesday and world leaders discussed Syria's deepening crisis at a U.N. General Assembly meeting, but without proposals to resolve it.

Vastly outgunned, rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad have increasingly relied on home-made bombs to target their opponents, striving to level the playing field against state forces using fighter jets, artillery and tanks.

"At exactly 9:35 a.m., seven improvised devices were set off in two explosions to target a school used for weekly planning meetings between shabbiha militia and security officers," said Abu Moaz, a leader of Ansar al-Islam, one of the rebel groups in the 18-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Rebels said they hoped their attack would kill top-level security officials - as they did with a major Damascus bombing in July - but gave no casualty count. State media said at least seven people were wounded, with minor damage to buildings.

Activists say that more than 27,000 people have been killed in the Syrian uprising, but the geo-strategic rivalries of world and regional powers have wrought deadlock over how to solve the conflict. The West and Gulf Arab states have sided with the opposition, while Iran, Russia and China have supported Assad.

Arab nations should intervene in Syria given the U.N. Security Council's failure to stop the civil war in the country, Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani said in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

Qatar, which backs the rebels, earlier called on big powers to prepare a "Plan B" within weeks and set up a no-fly zone to provide a safe haven inside Syria in case international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi fails to make headway.

The Qatari emir said he believed Arab and European countries would be ready to take part, despite their public wariness of committing the forces needed for such a mission.

Addressing the General Assembly, U.S. President Barack Obama accused Iran of helping keep a dictatorship in power in Syria.

"Just as it restricts the rights of its own people, the Iranian government props up a dictator in Damascus and supports terrorist groups abroad," Obama said in a reference to Assad.

"We again declare that the regime of Bashar al-Assad must come to an end so that the suffering of the Syrian people can stop, and a new dawn can begin."

"BAD AND GETTING WORSE"

Syria's conflict, once a peaceful protest movement, has evolved into a civil war that the U.N. Special Envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, said was "extremely bad and getting worse." He said that the stalemate in the country could soon "find an opening", without elaborating.

Even the capital Damascus has become a battleground between Assad's forces and opposition fighters.

Last week, the army bombarded rebel strongholds there to flush them out of the capital, once seen as Assad's untouchable seat of power but now a scene of daily fighting.

In Tuesday's Damascus bombing, the state news channel Syria TV quoted a government official as saying two improvised explosives planted by "terrorists" blew up near the "Sons of Martyrs" school.

Residents said smoke was billowing from the area in southeastern Damascus and ambulances were rushing to the scene. Some said they believed two people had died in the attack but could not name the victims.

Damascus residents also reported heavy clashes for two hours on Baghdad Street in a central district of the capital, just to the north of the ancient Old City.

ABUSED CHILDREN

The British-based charity Save the Children released a harrowing report about abuse of Syrian refugee children.

Khalid, 15, said he was hung by his arms from the ceiling of his own school building and beaten senseless. Wael said he saw a 6-year-old starved and beaten to death, "tortured more than anyone else in the room.

"He was beaten regularly. I watched him die," Wael was quoted as saying. "He only survived for three days and then he simply died."

U.N. investigators say Syrian government forces have committed human rights violations "on an alarming scale", but have also listed multiple killings and kidnappings by armed rebels trying to oust Assad after 12 years in power.

The children that Save the Children spoke to in refugee camps in neighbouring countries said they had witnessed massacres and seen family members killed during the conflict.

Humanitarian conditions are worsening as the violence drags on. The president of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, which has been the only relief group on the ground the entire 18 months of conflict, said it was in dire need of supplies.

"We need to concentrate mostly on health and shelter because there are 1.5 million displaced people," Abdul Rahman Attar told Reuters during a visit to Oslo. "We need more of everything."

"We need help with shelter, medical equipment in medicine," he said. "There's still killing and that's most critical, we must stop the killings first."

Roleplaying was always something I enjoyed as a kid, even in my early teens, and now I want to revisit it, and look forward to meeting some great people to roleplay with. Hopefully, there are some kindly players who will help me get involved with a nice casual but committed group of players, and we'll work on from there.

I also want to create a zombie themed roleplay - I'm sure there are plenty of them, but I have some ideas. :)
