COIT Cleaning and Restoration Company ... - Franchising.com

COIT, a leading supplier of specialty cleaning and disaster restoration services, is recognizing National Mold Awareness Month by reminding home and business owners that it is important to take steps to prevent mold from invading any building or structure.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 25, 2012 -??By the time you see or smell mold in your home or business, you might already have a problem that will be difficult to address,? Bob Kearn, President and CEO of COIT, said. ?In addition to posing a threat to the actual structure, there is scientific evidence that mold can be linked to a number of human health problems. Because eradicating mold can be costly and take time, the best strategy is to prevent its growth in the first place.?

The Institute of Medicine has found sufficient evidence to link indoor mold exposure to upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that immune-mediated condition. The Institute also found limited or suggestive evidence linking indoor mold exposure to respiratory illness in otherwise healthy children. Mold spores occur both indoors and outdoors, and can enter a house or place of business through open doorways, windows, or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems with outdoor air intakes. Mold spores can also attach themselves to clothing, shoes, bags, and pets, which then carry the spores inside. Although mold is naturally present almost everywhere, it can cause a problem if spores land in a damp area that promotes their ability to breed.

COIT recommends that home and business owners pay close attention to the humidity levels in their homes and offices and use a dehumidifier when necessary. In addition, regularly inspect roofs, pipes, walls, and even plant pots to be sure there are no leaks or areas with excessive moisture. Asking family members and guests to remove shoes before entering a home will prevent mold spores from being tracked inside on footwear. Scheduling regular professional carpet and area rug cleanings will prevent mold spores from taking hold among carpet and rug fibers. It?s also important to schedule regular cleaning services for draperies (which can be exposed to mold spores through open windows), upholstery, and tile and grout, especially if furniture or tiling has been regularly exposed to a damp environment.

COIT regularly performs air duct cleanings designed to eliminate not only a potential build-up of mold spores, but also dust and other allergens or contaminants (such as bacteria, fungus, mildew and other microbes) that can collect and build up in any heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system. To combat mold spores and for a generally healthier indoor environment, COIT suggests scheduling an air duct cleaning every two to three years.
